THE NARRATIVE BEHIND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MADHYAMAHESHWAR

The significance of panch kedar dates back to Mahabharata. Where after the great war, the pandavas in their enroute to seek forgiveness from lord shiva. For all the sins, violence, wrongdoings and evils which prevailed in the war lord shiva was displeased and vexed with them.

Pandavas when advised by sages and god Krishna , they sought lord Shiva to forgive them and endow them to attain salvation. Lord shiva by assuming the animal form of a bull or nandi left for the Himalayan Garhwali region  to avoid Pandavas , because of his annoyance with them for their conduct and the bloodshed in Mahabharata war. Pandavas who were determined to seek forgiveness, after sighting Shiva in the form of bull grazing in the hills of guptakashi, tried to coercively hold the bull by its tail and hind legs. But then the bull disappeared into the ground to appear later in his authentic self of Lord Shiva at five places; at Kedarnath in the form of hump, at Tungnath in the shape of bahu(arms), at Rudranath with his face, at Madhyamaheshwar his stomach and nabhi (navel) and at Kalpeshwar with his hair locks (jata). Pandavas, gratified with the revelation of lord Shiva at five places in different forms, built temples at these five places, worshipped him and attained salvation with blessings of shiva.
